EXCLUSIVE: Notion Ink ADAM (Specs, Pics)

As the global tech media waits for Notion Ink to unveil the Adam at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, we decided to hop across to Hyderabad and catch them before they caught the flight to MWC! It’s finally time to put an end to all the ’spec speculation’ around the Adam. We still don’t know what the Adam’s price will be, though we have been told that it will be competitively priced. We also have some exclusive pics of the Adam, from our shoot yesterday at the BVRIT Innovation Center in Hyderabad. The pictures show the final dimensions of the Adam, which has changed since the prototype was first shown at CES.

Adam currently runs on Android 2.1, and two versions are planned, one with the PixelQI screen, and one with a normal LCD backlit display. We also know that the Indian version of the Adam will not be 3G enabled as the infrastructure is practically non existent – “We won’t be using a 3G module in a region that is so sensitive to price.” For more insights on Adam, read this entry.

Update: At MWC, the Notion Ink founders said that they will be aiming for a Q3 2010 launch, so we’re looking at market availability only after the month of August.

get HTC involved and get me a prototype ! I want my employers underwriters using one when they visit the brokers and get thier online quotes. People will sitand get a quote to see this work and they'll visit your website cause tehy want an opensoursed " Ipad beater"

Personally I want an integrated stylus or pencil case and the ability to run Adobe photoshop Lightroom. preferably a plastic screen as with the Cambridge based PlasticLogic 's QUE ProReader. and relatively easy swap out hard drives for storage ( or plug n play interface for Memory cards /mini USB), A decent (rotating?) camera for skype/VOIP that can act as an image scanner (Pencil case folds out to be table tripod?) and spill resistant ( Easy enough to put baffels on the fan is it has one and rubber plugs on the ports.)
And ('cause I have wife kids and bank managers to support) - it has to be - cheap!

dead line is... August? ( well, you like a challange!)

The first PAD type computer was built in prototype quantities at Apple in early 1990's. The genius behind this device was Dr. Gursharan Singh Sidhu. At that time Steve Jobs was ousted by the guy from Pepsi and the project died. But the technology remained and was revived and revamped later.

Congratulations!! n well done for your outstanding work which i think is mindblowing,i really want this type of gadget with me all the time. same question i am asking Where to buy when its available , for me outside the US ?
  • alxx
    Congratulations!!
Good to see a great product , hopefully will be a big success!

Good luck to them on hitting the release dates
    (without going to crazy)

Be interesting to know where its getting manufactured (pcb , case etc) and assembled.

Can't wait to get my hands on a decent ereader/tablet with the pixelq screen,
the screen in the olpc was fantastic for reading on.

Anyone know when they'll be releasing the sdk ?
Is it a separate sdk or customised version of the android dev kit ?
Will it support other languages ?

Where to buy when its available , for all of us outside the US ?

One more thing! What about Customer service? That is the one thing that separates the men from the boys! can you get service for this item? Look what happened to the Google phone! Good phone, none or little customer system!

I have been following this for some time now. I need fresh news! When will this be out? This product has it over the iPad just by having a camera. And all the talk about Apple for the user is right but Apple is a benevolent king who only lets us have what they approve of. I like the open OS. It is alive, Android lives!! Fresh news please.
  • Kedar
Any patents filed for any innovation in this product? I mean what are those points which will raise a wall around your product to protect it from the copycats?
  • blacklisted
can we watch hd videos on Notion Ink Adam....??
  • fantasticboy22
KUDOS Notion Ink... You have rocked with such a powerful tablet and made iPad so mean.. :-)
  • hardbond
Hmmm another CRIPPLED big screen touch wonder blunder. Why in India are we copy cats.. Apple's iPad is a wonder blunder.. why do we want to try to beat it with our blunder here.. infact it should have been a machine that would run windows 7... then I would say INNOVATION...why not innovative.. and guys who think Apple's suck.. well try your hands on one. and you wil say.. PC SUCKS...
  • algebra
hmmm....maybe, just maybe because android is designed to be used as a mobile OS sans keyboard and mouse.

And maybe windows 7 really really needs a keyboard and mouse...try working on menus that are too small for your stubby finger in windows 7, its an exercise in frustration.
  • jerkins750i
For being in a country like India, its definitely a bold and very credible attempt from Notion Ink.
I wish them the very best. I hope many more engineers, like those at Notion Ink, will be inspired to make more hi-tech products. The only issue, I guess, is that only a small percentile of the Indian market would be mature enough to fully utilize or see the potential of such high end products. I hope I'm wrong about this. Kudos to Notion Ink!!

I did a comparison of the Adam, iPad, eDGe, Archos 9, and Moto AMP 10 two weeks ago, in case you want to fill in more details:

Double-check that Apple iPad output spec. Last I read, it can only output analog video via its docking connector... same connector used for the iPod and iPhone. No 720p. It can play (and downscale) 720p video, but not to a television. It can output 1024x768 to a VGA monitor.. still not quite 720p. Which does beg the question: why bother with only analog video output in 2010?

Anyway, this looks like a sweet device.. the first tablet-style computer I might actually buy. It seems to do everything one should need from a tablet: iBooks, web, photo/video docking with USB cameras, PMP-player stuff, etc.
  • rob2002
Great news. This is how India has to earn a name and place for itself in the world of hi-tech. We simply cannot be a manufacturing powerhouse because our communists will use their trade unions will sabotage it as they want China to be the leader. Pervasive corruption, need to get 50 permissions and bribe 100 babus to move one chip from one end of table to another will kill a product even before you can say "form 65 under Rule 234(a) read with Section 223 in quintuplicate"...

It will only generate some high end jobs in some big city but that is the way it is..unfortunately..
  • raghuk
Product innovation and NPD(New Product Development) are driven by SWOT analysis ,market demand, gap analysis and pricing strategies (commodity/niche). The group has come up with an innovative product that has strategic value in the current marketplace that is driven by mobility, information access and convenience. With the dimensions of carrying a laptop becoming the extreme of product from a size metrics to downsize upon, the team innovated aptly keeping these factors in mind.Focussing on pixel size, throughput,OS affinity(Linux/Unix/Android) are more tactical to reach out to user community to perhaps generate high returns. The 200 million plus educated Indian middle class diaspora certainly contribute round 30% of intellectual capital of fortune 500 companies in all sectors (BFSI, R&D,Biotechnology, HIT) . Certainly strengthens the analysis of Goldman Sachs that positions Indian economy to be the 3rd largest in two decades (BRIC report).I wish the group the best of success.Extra affinity due to the company being based in my home town, Hyderabad!Good luck!!

Guys This type of product will change the picture of India very soon rather then developing products for some other company in some other country and they earn all the gains

This is not going to easy to beat the competitors like Apple it will take some time but it cab be done for sure, some one need the balls to do that and you guys have that

    you guys rock
  • coolestneeraj
    hi...amazing stuff !!
  • praveenkasireddy
i say govt will support this young talent ...
  • praveenkasireddy
    Awesome.....

its look is simple for the people who think its just assembling different parts together as ADAM....but there will be a lot of research done behind that ,if not everybody (dell, hcl, samsung, hp)might have released their iPad. These guys put their thoughts and made it real, which was not done by any other 3rd person..................

i'm more happy that ADAM is coming out to the real world from Hyderabad (India)... l am proud being Indian.

i guess price will be lesser compare to Apple iPad, can someone tell us the real meaning for ADAM or can give some good abbreviation either...

I hope by the time it is released more features will be added to it...

thank you guys, you guys made India proud.

I wish NI team gets more support from Indian govt and help from corporates to release product in India.
  • vamsy
    u r product is great !
    good job guys.
the name u would have opted for more indian type of name instead of adam.
any way once again proud do be indian.
  • vikas12345
I believe that the launch was delayed in India because of the governmental and import issues. The babus at the govt offices and import sections just wont understand about the product and if they do, there is an added premium of getting stuff back from Taiwan to sell here. US launch is far more easier than Indian for them. I think here there is only one option for them, to collaborate with some big firm like Dell, who can simplify task for them. But then the name is lost.
  • Wow! Just a few words AMAZING, its INDIAN. Its ADAM.
However, what beats me is why on Earth do Indians feel ashamed of doing it in their home??? Product Launch in the US, Movie Launch abroad, Record of centuries outside India....blah, blah.

If we have it, we got to flaunt it....at home first !!....This is a product from Indian brains, evolved from Indian colleges [IIT], and in my opinion should be launched first in India to show the world that the Indian market of a billion+ people is also the smartest and biggest in the world !!...

Dont want to undermine the effort, however, I feel our smart friends should not let ADAM be stripped down and compared to Ipad in the US. If the world wants to compare, let them come to India and do the jiggy-wiggy....what say?
  • Guest
Exactly. I like what you said dude!
  • shriphani
The thing is that they need to hit critical mass, get it out to devs, develop an ecosystem for apps and get $$ in before they take on Asian markets. This isn't a patriotism issue but an economic one. I am not sure why this is becoming a putting oneself on the world map issue but the forum members aside, without a nice ecosystem for their device, it will be hard to ship {x} million units in India. This product doesn't become any less revolutionary if launched elsewhere. I wish these guys lots of success since they are smart and can solve problems.

And yeah, Indians don't need to prove anything to anyone.
  • sebarsh
Hats off to u guys..... u guys are amazing you make india proud, if it is touch screen i will going to throw my i phone 3G it will rock the world i am eagerly waiting to get launch in india

Please do not comment if you do not understand technology and how the technology business operates. Some might also say that Pixel Qi corp is also just an assembly line. Pixel Qi used existing screen technology and did some innovative design changes to come up with the screen. You must understand that there is research at every step. Designing a product does not mean just assembling the components. Otherwise every major company in the world could perhaps be called an assembly line. I really do not understand when you talk about the"real people" behind technologies. Did Pixel-qi create the technology for the screen? Did Apple create the technology behind ipad? You need to understand more about the technology business before you make such comments
  • rajeevsharma
hi fri i am to much exited about this product, it is same story like APPLE done before.and i remember that previous time BILL GATES said that the next bill gates(or like me) comes from INDIA or china. so you really done this and provide a amaging product for the world

Another example of "India Shining"--- Be Indian Do Indian Buy Indian not to be outshone by others. My suggestions is to put this amazing competitive gizmo in Indian market first if not simultaneous launch in India and abroad. We need to do a marketing blizkring similar in line with what Apples Steve job did, (the presentation is available on sites--internet).
Great keep the Tricolor flying high.

  • nnanda
This is an awesome product on paper. As an Indian, I am also thrilled to cherish the moment it comes to market. But there are two things which I believe is critical for Adam to get success:
    1. Form factor: Apple is known for its for its customer attractions. Look at iPhone's design and other smart phone's designs. iPhone is definitely a winner there. Similarly, iPad has a nice form factor. This is very important for the customers who don't know technology. For a common man, the design should look better and the UI must be tempting. It doesn't matter if it runs on Unix, Linux, Windows or any xyz OS.

    2.
2.1 The OS platform: This is most important for the content developers. Apple has got the success with iPhone OS (and this is why they didn't come out with a new OS for iPad) and it has certainly the largest developer base. This product must provide a similar platform. Android is equally better as a developer platform, but it is yet to gain the momentum that iPhone OS has got. Linux, Chromium are new customers in this world.

2.2. The applications: Apple has already the largest app for iPhone and iPad SDK is out, so iPad will also join the party soon. Apple also came up with iBooks, a platform to share e-books. e-book sharing and reading is not new (Amazon and Sony are already there); but the iBooks is now targeted by many book publishers.

    3. Hardware Platform: Last, but not least, hardware is very important to run the software. Apple has done a clever stuff with iPad; they designed their own chip (Apple A4) which is specially optimized for iPhone OS. Result: iPhone's touch interface is best in the world (although other phones provide screens with better resolution). Wo, just equipping nVidea Tegra is not sufficient. The OS (Android, Ubuntu or Chromium) needs that kind of optimization to work best on that hardware. This is very important (again) for a common man.

Guys, don't get me wrong. I am not a hardcore Apple fan (although I am typing this on a MacBook Pro). But, let's accept one thing. Apple cares for common men; it always brings products which is easy for a layman to use; not a developer. And this is one of the key thing ignored by all other platforms including Nokia.

    1) Form factor :Notion Ink form factor has received rave reviews. Infact, perhaps it is the strongest USP for adam, compared to the flat slate like ipad
    2) OS platform : Notion Ink has plans to launch its appstore and has already started acclerating the process of application development with the help and support of global android community
    3) Hardware platfrom is chosen carefully.

Adam is going to be more intuitive and user friendly compared to ipad.

Linux Today (http://www.linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=...) indicated that Adam would eventually run on Ubuntu. Is there any truth to that? Is it worth waiting for?
  • krishnaaerabati
Rohan Shravan, one of the founder of Notion Ink, commented here http://bit.ly/cJTcPf
In his words "Adam is not Linux, and it will not be.It is Android and we are changing its User Interface cos we know, you cannot just scale 3.2 inch OS to 10inch display."
  • Dick
Thanks for the clarification, that is very helpful. I can't wait for it to be released!
  • Caeser96
TO quote a recent Nobel laureate or India origin - a little less nationalistic worship please! I'm in no way discounting the research and effort and not to mention the development and engineering effort that went into ADAM, but let's keep some perspective as Karthiksk wisely suggests.

Great work from the IITians! Here's to hoping that this is only a start.
  • bkmisra
I don't understand much of technology, but I understand it is done by a group of young Indians. This is enough for my excitement. I believe we can conquer the world the brain way. I am eager to buy one if I can afford. CONGRATULATIONS, my young friends.

  • Mind blowing.. The specs of the adams were simply awesome.. ll eagerly wait for this desi product, ,,
  • While I am happy that this is coming from India, let's not make the typical Apple-bashing feature-to-feature comparisons with the iPad. Such comparisons never tell the true picture as many have compared the iPhone to other smartphones in the past. One of the biggest advantages that the iPad is *likely* to have is the custom content. The NY Times e-reader is simply not going to be ported to the iPad - it will take advantage of iPad's features fully.Such custom content is unlikely to be available on the Adam - it will be the websites as they are on any other browser. I wish them good luck & success.
  • To get the initial success you have to compare it with big company like Apple.

Remember when iPad launched people started to compare this with Amazon Kindle.

So this is not we this is customer who will compare this while buying any product. This is natural Bhat.
  • No harm in Adam pitching it against iPad. But a feature to feature comparison does not always give the correct picture. Sure iPad may score more on feature and less on the other (like how the iphone's camera was compared to better equipped camera phones) but the integrated approach of the iPad makes such feature-to-feature comparisons pointless. Apple does not attempt to be all things to all people."more features = better' is not always the case. See more here: http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2010/02/if-you...
  • RoadWarriorsUSA
Please don't be silly as if the NY Times e-reader won't be ported over the Android OS..... which duh, then would work just fine on the Adam
  • commentsplease
Infact a lot of newspapers and magazine content providers are already in discussion with Notion Ink for content collaborations
  • If you read my comment, what I said was the likes of NY Times will come with iPad-versions, like what Wired is planning (http://www.cultofmac.com/chris-anderson-wired-m...), whereas that may not be possible with other tablets.
  • rondownunder
they need to do that coz the ipad doesnt support full web browsing with flash which the Adam does.... so you dont need a custom job with Adam...it'll deliver full desktop grade browsing experience.
  • Dick
I think the feature by feature comparisons to Ipad are critically important. Further, Adam's open system approach will generate application equality with apple.
  • ranga12345
Thanks to Notion Ink and BVRIT for giving 1st indian made.
  • karthiksk
I understand our need to cherish achievement. But before people lose sight of the big picture: The underlying technological marvel is the Pixel Qi screen which was the brainchild of Dr.Mary Lou (previously of the OLPC project).

Mary Lou founded Pixel Qi Corporation in 2008 and is its CEO. Previously, Mary Lou has founded 4 companies, served as a professor at RMIT (Australia) & MIT, and in executive management at Intel Corporation. Mary Lou holds a Ph.D. in Optical Sciences, a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.A. in Art (req.) all from Brown University as well as a Master of Science (in Holography) from the MIT Media Lab.

So the kids here know how to assemble a product and design an interface (perhaps?). But let's not lose focus of the real people behind these technologies. You don't get great technology without investing in research.
  • atabak
Really Funny. Usually when a webpage is all about admiring a Device, the comments of that are really useful and almost always fair so I am used to reading them. today as always I came to check the comments area an look what I've got. Arguing about whether this company is creative or not. just read the comments Here on a similar page 2 see what non-Indians have to say about Adam.

Let's cheer up the guys, atleast - that they're capable of doing what we didn't/can't.

Congratulations to everyone there at Notion Ink! Keep it up!

    Hey Karthik,

I understand the components in ADAM are being made by other companies or the technology is the brainchild of professors, etc., does it mean that you can criticize like the way you want. Common dude, at-least try to wait till the product comes to the market.
Can you answer the following questions.
    1. Do you know where the code for SQL-Server originated - It is Sybase.
    2. Do you know what is the core of Mac Operating System - It is Unix Core

Now, Is it apt to say that MS and Apple are good Integrators or Assemblers, I will call myself a fool if i say so.

    Funny comment from you though.

    1. Do you know where the code for SQL-Server originated - It is Sybase.
    2. Do you know what is the core of Mac Operating System - It is Unix Core

So you want to say that MS and Apple took sybase and Unix and just renamed it to their products.... U wanna say that these companies didnt add in nything

But what did ppl at notionink add in.... dey simply assembled a ipad kinda device thats it!!!
  • taylorlauder
Apple may be the best tablet for now, but seeing it, lacking some core-features, makes a user want to think twice before buying this one.

I guess, its Sans the GPS/Flash/Camera makes it a real Turn-off for aspiring buyers to get this one. On the brighter side, at least the price isn't that much steep, although I doubt that users would buy the 500 USD 16GIG iPad -- To think that its capacity is not expandable, meaning you're going to spend your days with that limitation.

If you'll ask me? I think I would go for the alternatives and I guess Notion Ink Adam will be on my list. Comparisson: http://bit.ly/ipad-details-under-examination
  • rexian
You are not comparing apples to apples (probably should have picked a different fruit) here. You need to understand that while these kids are definitely doing an excellent job (I still need to see the UI), they are still assembling the chipset, screen and memory made by others.

Developing Aqua (GUI of MacOS) on top of FreeBSD was not mean feat. It's the UI that has made Apple different from everybody and that's why iPhone, while having no better hardware than a comparable HTC smartphone, changed the game forever. And this is not assembling at all, this more like creating an art like an artist does. While assembling Adam is way more complex than assembling computer, it's still assembling unless they also provide a UI comparable to Apple's.

I wouldn't comment on Sybase to SQL Server transition, but given the marketshare MS has these days in DB server market, I'd say they have done well too.

Apple is doing something very similar as well. Every component is made by someone else, except for the graphics chip I think. And while the OS is built by them, it's not something revolutionary. This iPad thing just looks like a giant iPod Touch. These guys at NI would have got a huge chance if they could beat Apple to the market. Launching it several months after Apple here in US would hurt them badly as the target crowd might have already gone for iPad. Also pricing would be an issue if they don't keep it down. $350 sounds reasonable but who would want to put $500+ for an unknown brand?

Let's see how they do. All the best to NI.
  • patrickeb
I'd agree that Apple have done a good job, but not in the way that you explained.

The GUI for the Mac is seriously NOT that good. I know people how use the things who are only able to use them because other people showed them how...similarly with Windows GUI.

Building the GUI on top of the BSD framework was easier (no, I didn't do it) then making BSD in the first place and no more kudos should go to Apple in doing so than should go to other GUI builders. It's just shiny and has iCandy (TM).

I know a number of users who are as clueless as their Windows counterparts.

I'd argue that Apple's success is partly due to the effect of having glitz, an intergrated eco system, Jobs (who is a good salesman) and the distortion effect that occurs around such things.

Sequiing: remember Nike? Huge. Amazing. Fantastic, "must have" footwear. Their shoes were and are not that good and they behaved appallingly towards their workers in Indonesia...BUT they had good marketing, some big sports names who didn't mind being paid AND being given free shoes and thus they created a distortion field for the public...commonly known as marketing genius :))

I agree with your point about cost. These things need to be cheap. They don't do much.

The screen is the thing I'm very interested in.

Does this have the ability to turn off colour? The screens which appear like paper are much easier to read from (or so I'm told).
  • commentsplease
you are right the content is the king.. the UI, ease of use, applications and content availability on adam is going to be comparable to ipad.. perhaps it will take some time to reach an appstore the size of apple..but i think it will cover more applications than you expect.. and because of the open source nature of android i think they are going to catch up very fast

The price as i have often been told by the NI team is going to make us happy
