A look at the Pixel QI display

In recent news, the Pixel Qi screen has been nominated for an award: “The Most Creative Electronics Design of the Year” by IEEE/EETimes.

Pixel QI also got plenty of buzz at CES, but if you dig deep enough, you’ll soon find that this ultra low power display designed to be readable in sunlight was invented for use first in the OLPC!

Usually we expect technology to trickle down from the top, but this innovation was intended for the bottom of the pyramid!

Mary Lou Jepsen was CTO of the OLPC project and helped create many innovations that would make it possible to manufacture a laptop for kids at a $100 price point.

Pixel QI finds itself in an enviable position, in a highly competitive industry: “We appear to be the only screen entering mass production designed for reading that offers color, video, longer battery life and works as-is with existing software stacks (from OS to viewers) and in any lighting condition including the pitch black and outside in direct sunlight and integrates easily with touchscreen.” says Mary Lou Jepsen on her blog.
